They didnt ask to be called heroes, but their actions left fire fighters and city officials in awe of their courage.

We have the opportunity to celebrate some of our citizens who behaved as courageously as our firefighters who are in uniform, Mayor Melissa Johnson said.

Fire Chief Marc McElreath and the city council gathered during the Jan. 30 city council meeting for a special presentation to recognize three West Jordan citizens for their life-saving efforts during a house fire.

On Dec. 17, 2012, Daniel and Chris Jaterka pulled Andrew Galloway from his burning home after the mans younger brother rushed to their home seeking help. Nick Galloway was home finishing his schoolwork when he heard a chirping sound. His 26-year-old brother, who is confined to a wheelchair, was asleep in a nearby bedroom.

I stepped outside and called my dad. He told me to check and see if everything was alright, Nick said. I checked on my brother. While I was in the hall I saw a light under a door.

Nick opened the door to find the room hot and filled with smoke and fire.Knowing he couldnt get his brother out of the house alone, the 14-year-old dialed 911 and rushed to a neighbors for help.

We were at home and Nick came running down pounding on the door saying there was a fire and Andrew was trapped inside, Daniel Jaterka said.

Jaterka and his son, Chris, ran to the burning home. They approached the front door, but the fire was too hot and thick smoke filled the air.

My son just picked up a rock and broke a window, Jaterka said. We were reaching in and finding Andrew. It was pretty intense.

Together, the pair pulled Galloway to safety shortly before fire crews and paramedics arrived on scene.

“Daniel and Chris made some terrific decisions that had to be made for this outcome to happen,” McElreath said. “Without Nicholas’ quick action of dialing 911 and going for help, I know this would have had a very different outcome.”
